There are many things that people have to consider when their home is being constructed or renovated. One of the most important things that are to be installed in HVAC or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. People mostly do not take care of all these things.

There are different types of ductwork used in these systems, and the owner has to choose the one suitable for his home. One type of ductwork commonly installed in HVAC systems is the flexible duct. Let us know about this type of ductwork, other types of ducts, and why you should prefer flexible one over others.

Overview of ductwork

Ducts are a type of passageway, which are used in an HVAC system to allow the flow of air. The major task of these ducts is to remove air from the room and deliver fresh air inside. The ducts can be used for delivering air at different temperatures. If the house is under construction or remodelling, all these things must also be considered. If the ducts are not installed properly, it cannot deliver the air and the climate of the house will not be good.

Difference between rigid and flexible ductwork

Ductwork is of two types, rigid ductwork and flexible ductwork. People have to choose any one of them to be installed in their home. They have to know about the features, pros, and cons of both these systems to make a wise choice.

Flexible ductwork

The shape of this ductwork is in the form of a tube. To make this duct, a wire coil is used which is covered with durable plastic. After that, fiberglass insulation is used to cover the tube. This type of flexible duct can be used in such a place where installation of the duct is not easy. The option is inexpensive because the materials used to make this duct are cheap.

Rigid ductwork

There are various shapes in which rigid ductwork is available. Many types of materials are used to make this kind of ductwork and it is available in different sizes. It is available in a cylindrical or rectangular shape. The solid material is included in this duct that is covered with insulation. This ductwork is more reliable and durable in comparison to the flexible duct. The cost is more, but the quality of this duct is high too. Another advantage is that it does not make any noise when air passes through it.  Here are some types of rigid ductwork.

Fiberboard ducts: This ductwork is made from compressed fiberboard and is covered with resin. The whole thing is covered with a foil laminate so that it can be protected from moisture.

Fiberglass lined ducts: This duct is made from sheet metal and the internal and external linings are made with fiberglass.

Sheet metal ducts: Aluminum and galvanized are the materials that are used to make this kind of duct.

Pros and cons of rigid and flexible ducts

Both these ducts have some pros and cons, which are as follows.

Flexible duct

  • Proper installation of this duct is very important. The curves should be as less as possible.
  • It is necessary to minimize turns and bends, as airflow can be affected.
  • Installation of these ducts is easy and they are of low cost.
  • Moulds cannot be formed in sheet metals ducts, as it is non-porous.
  • The fiberglass deteriorates easily, which causes particles to be mixed with air.
  • Cleaning fiberglass ducts is very difficult.

Rigid ducts

  • Moulds cannot be formed in sheet metals ducts, as it is non-porous.
  • The fiberglass deteriorates easily, which causes particles to be mixed with air.
  • Cleaning fiberglass ducts is very difficult.

Wrapping Up

Flexible duct is inexpensive as it is made from cheap material. People like to install them because cleaning them is easy.
