Are you wanting to declutter your home but don’t know where to start?
Many of us strive to keep a clean and tidy home, but often we fail. We have too many possessions we don’t use, but for some reason, we find it hard to part with them. Due to this, we have drawers and cupboards filled with rubbish that we actively avoid opening.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. Decluttering your home can be simple and rather fun.
In this article, we’ll share tips on how to declutter your home and organize it how you want.
Read on for more information.
Use the Five Container Method
For a job as big as decluttering your home, you need to be organized.
When most people start to declutter, they often have a trash bag nearby. This is great, but what happens to those items you would rather donate or repair?
These tend to get put to one side as you tell yourself you’ll come back to them later. But you don’t and so all you have done is repositioned the clutter.
To avoid this situation, you should adopt the five container process. Get five containers or bags together and label them as followed:
- Trash- This is for getting rid of the items you no longer want or need.
- Recycle- This is for paper, cardboard, and other recyclable materials.
- Donate- This is usually for clothes and shoes which can be donated to charities.
- Put Away- This container is for the items which have become lost and need putting back in their rightful place.
- Fix/Mend- The last container is for items that you want to keep but need some TLC.
Once you have your containers ready, then you can begin decluttering.
Start off Small and Build Momentum
The thought of decluttering entire garages or basements can fill you with anxiety. Once this happens, it’s easy to avoid doing it altogether.
To prevent this, try to start off in a small way.
Go to a room, which isn’t that messy and won’t take a lot of time to declutter. Set a time limit for 25 minutes and once it buzzes then stop for a short break. Then just repeat this 2-4 times before stopping for the day.
This method is actually called the Pomodoro technique and is a great way to approach difficult tasks.
By taking this approach, you’ll build up momentum and it will feel more manageable. You can then spend more time organizing on the days you feel motivated.
Be Strict Whilst You Do It
A common problem people have whilst decluttering is not wanting to let go of possessions. All this does is waste time and keep the house messy with non-essential items.
Whilst decluttering, be strict and ask yourself whether you really need this item. If you haven’t used it in a year or more, then get rid of it.
