What is this Unsecapp.exe?

The Unsecapp.exe is a very important component of the Windows OS. It is related to the Windows Management Instrumentation Sub System or WMI. This WMI is associated with Windows since Windows 7 days. It helps some programs like User Account and System Services, to interact with the OS. Without WMI and Unsecapp these programs can’t run on the OS.

The cause of its suddenly running in the background

The program Unsecapp comes pre-installed on your PC. It’s an integral part of the Windows OS. It is located at Windows/System 32/wbem / folder. This app runs only when some app or some newly installed app requires WIM service to run smoothly. Then only you see it in the Task Manager.

Is the service related to Avast antivirus?

Although there is no relation between Avast and Unsecapp, yet, you might have seen this service running immediately after an Avast update. Avast requires the services of WIM while monitoring some apps and fetching user data. Then the Unsecapp program starts if not already running.

Can Unsecapp.exe be removed?

You must not consider removing this file at any cost. This is a system file and is very tightly integrated to the OS. Deleting this file will render your system unstable. Some apps and games will stop working altogether and many others may work weirdly. But if you find the file is not signed by Microsoft, it might be a virus or a malware and it requires immediate removal from the system. I am giving below how to ascertain the authenticity of the file and if found risky, how to remove it.

How to check the Unsecapp file is Authentic.

This file is in most cases genuine. But you never know. A virus or malware can assume any name. So to know for sure the process showing in your Task Manager is actually being run by Windows itself and it’s not malware, follow the steps.

  1. Click on the Start button and type Task Manager in the search bar.
  2. Launch the program by clicking on it.
  3. Windows 7 opens full Task manager by default. But for Windows 8 and 10, click on the More Details button located at the bottom left to open the full view.
  4. Find the Unsecapp process and Right-click on it.
  5. Then click on Find file location.
  6. In the file folder search for Unsecapp.exe file and Right-click on it.
  7. Now click on Properties.
  8. In the Properties box find Digital Signature located among the tabs at the top.
  9. Here you will find if the file has been digitally signed by Microsoft or not. Any file owned by Microsoft or any other company digitally signs it. So if it is signed by Microsoft, don’t mess with it. Otherwise, your computer will become unusable.

But in case you find the file lacks a digital signature from Microsoft, this might be a virus or some malware planted by some rogue on your system.  In such a situation, follow the steps to remove the file immediately from your system.
